Hoy en día nuestras mascotas tienen mejor calidad de vida que nunca hasta la fecha. Los avances en investigación y la dedicación de los dueños lleva a que cada vez vivan más tiempo, además de vivir mejor. Plandes de medicina preventiva, gran calidad en la alimentación, progresos en técnicas diagnósticas y tratamientos, hacen posible que hoy en día no nos sorprendamos al ver gatos que alcanzan los dieciocho años de edad y perros que sobrepasan los quince años de vida.
Con la edad, la probabilidad de padecer enfermedades crónicas aumenta. Unas veces es el corazón, otras veces los riñones… y a veces nuestro diagnóstico es el temido cáncer. Cuando esto ocurre necesitamos asimilar lo que acabamos de conocer. Poca gente se plantea que su mascota con insuficiencia cárdiaca o renal no puede seguir viviendo y que debe decidirse por la dolorosa opción de la eutanasia, sin embargo, he observado a lo largo de mi trayectoria como veterinario que cuando el diagnóstico es un tumor en ocasiones las implicaciones son tan fuertes que inevitablemente pasamos por alto un detalle: ninguna de las dos enfermedades tiene cura, en el cáncer el objetivo del tratamiento suele ser el mismo que en patologías cardiacas o renales:

El acuerdo al que llegamos cuando empezamos a pensar en tratar a nuestro animal con quimioterapia debe ser claro y bien entendido por ambas partes: debe encontrarse mejor con el tratamiento que con la enfermedad, sólo así estará justificado llevar a cabo un tratamiento de este tipo. No buscaremos en ningún momento alargar la vida del animal a costa de los efectos secundarios que, por desgracia, todos conocemos en medicina humana. Lo que pretendemos es darle un tiempo de vida, puede que solo sean unos meses, puede que sean un par de años, pero que constituyan un verdadero regalo para él y para los que le rodean, algo de lo que pueda beneficiarse toda la familia y que, pasado el tiempo, nos haga volver la vista atrás en el tiempo y decir ¡SÍ! MERECIÓ LA PENA, VOVLERÍA A HACERLO!!
